The Capuchin Museum and Crypt in Rome stands out as a major cultural institution dedicated to offering visitors from all parts of the world an immersive experience in the history and spirituality of the Order of Capuchin Friars Minor. Its mission is divided into two main areas.
The first area concerns documentation and outreach, through which the institution strives to provide an accurate and in-depth account of the Order’s spirituality and centuries-old history. Special emphasis is placed on the exemplary lives of Capuchin saints and the history of the convent, whose construction, begun at the behest of the Barberini family, was completed in 1631.
The second area concerns the preservation and enhancement of a site of extraordinary historical and cultural value: the Crypt of the Capuchins. Located under the church of St. Mary of the Conception, it houses the mortal remains of some 3,700 Capuchin friars, arranged in a visually and emotionally striking arrangement. The Museum, opened in 2012, aims to integrate the Crypt within a larger exhibition itinerary, providing visitors with the tools for an in-depth understanding of Capuchin spirituality.
The Capuchin Museum and Crypt in Rome, therefore, is not limited to the mere preservation of an invaluable historical and cultural site, but aims to stimulate deep reflection on the themes of life, death and spirituality, configuring itself as a high-profile educational experience for its visitors.
